What should we cook tonight? A 2-minute way out of the loop

Stuck in the daily "what should we cook?" loop? Use these quick rules, a list of 15 easy dinners, and a plan-once-a-week habit to end it.

“I built this because I hated the daily ‘what should we cook?’ loop.” If that sentence sounds like your kitchen at 5:30 pm, here is how to get out of it, both tonight and for good.

Tonight: three quick questions

  1. What protein do we have? Eggs, beans, chicken, tofu, ground meat, canned fish.
  2. What needs using up? Half a bag of spinach, a soft pepper, leftover rice.
  3. How much energy is there? Under 20 minutes means eggs, quesadillas, fried rice or pasta.

15 easy dinners to fall back on

  • Fried rice with frozen peas and eggs
  • Quesadillas with beans and cheese
  • Pasta with garlic, olive oil and whatever greens you have
  • Sheet-pan sausage and vegetables
  • Shakshuka (eggs in tomato sauce) with bread
  • Chicken or tofu stir-fry over rice
  • Black bean soup from cans
  • Baked potatoes with chili or broccoli and cheese
  • Tuna melts and tomato soup
  • Turkey or veggie burgers with salad
  • Pesto pasta with cherry tomatoes
  • Burrito bowls
  • Omelettes or frittata
  • Ramen with an egg and frozen veg
  • Flatbread pizzas

For good: decide once a week

The loop is a daily decision with no information. Move it to one weekly decision with a list in hand: choose 3 to 5 dinners on the weekend, shop once, and the daily question becomes “which of these five tonight?”
